Community Features: Matt Fowler

We are excited to host our second community conversation with the UK based Matt Fowler, the senior designer behind identities for festivals and venues such as Junction 2, Egg LDN, Resident Advisor and Houghton Festival. Check him out.

So, tell us who the man behind Order Design is.

I'm a graphic and motion designer based in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.

How did you first get into the creative and design industries?

I was fully inspired by the 90s rave culture and was obsessed with collecting rave flyers. I would try and emulate them and create my own versions mucking around on photoshop. I also used to DJ, so music and art go hand in hand. I think I knew from pretty early on I wanted to be creative and design was the natural progression.

What are you most passionate about when it comes to your craft?

I love motion. Creating unique bespoke animations is definitely my favourite thing to design.

Which skills have you been learning recently and which ones are you looking to learn?

Over the last two years through collaborations and personal projects i've been experimenting with motion. After Effects in particular is such a powerful tool to implement motion into my personal and client project work. I've recently started to learn C4D to integrate 3D elements into my animation work and take it to the next level.

Nice. Let's talk about the not so positive things, What has been your biggest struggle as a creative/designer?

My biggest struggle is putting some of my 'out there' ideas into place. I think most creatives have this issue, it's just about believing in yourself and having faith in what you are doing.

We understand you are an experienced designer, but where do you see your career within the next 5 years?

The dream is to be approached by clients based on the style and quality of my work and fully believe in what I do. I would also like to get into the skill-share side of things, talking through my process and how I develop and implement my ideas into my work.

What about your dream gig? Have you got it already?

Being a freelance designer has always been an ambition of mine so in a way I already have it. Don't get me wrong, it's tough but extremely rewarding at the same time.

In your opinion, how important is design to society and communities?

Very important. Design is everywhere and it's impacts every part of our daily lives. It inspires, instructs and influences. Without it the world would pretty boring and bland.

Which works are you most proud of? Would you like to share some?

Some of my collaboration work has been the most successful and rewarding. Getting good feedback and interaction is a good feeling knowing that you are inspiring other creatives.

Where do you see the Design industry within the next 10 years? Any new technology you may be particularly excited about?

I think studio/freelancer remote working collaborations will be more prevalent. Due to what's going on in the world it's already starting to happen, the flexibility of working remotely will be very advantageous to designers across the globe. Working with clients in the events industry I'm interested to see how technological adaptation of the live stream / VR aspect of festivals will develop. It's a natural progression where people can experience the festival vibes from the comfort of their own home.

Finally, how do you want people to remember you when it is all set and done?

That I've been the best designer I can be and I've created art that people have enjoyed.
